The Troll

2023

The 2023 troll was built by Matt, co-founder of Brix Cider and co-creator of the Burning Troll event. The design was inspired by Matt’s sister Beth who drew the troll artwork for this website, posters, etc. Almost all of the materials for the troll were repurposed scrap (old pallets, used cardboard boxes, some boards ripped from a neighbor’s house when moving, a shipping crate for the Brix Cider bottling line, etc.). There was also a Christmas tree stuffed inside, and there was a gown and a big head of troll hair made out of sticks.

2024

The 2024 troll was built primarily from wood harvested from the farm, stacked like a complex firewood pile. A lot of it came from 1 massive Burr Oak tree that fell in our yard during a big storm. The trunk of the tree was largely hollowed out, and cut pieces of that hollow trunk made up the troll’s eyes. Larger broken pieces of the same tree stuck out as ears. Skinny branches stuck out of the top as hair. It made for one heck of a big fire!

2025

The 2025 troll is in the works! This year’s troll will likely be a troll king on a throne. No symbolism there! Just a wholesome, cathartic fire to enjoy :)
